| Sir Denis put together in his lifetime, what is widely considered the most important private collection of XVII Century Italian paintings, and his collection comprising of some 78 paintings has been deposited with public museums in the UK, Ireland and Italy to be permanently accessible to the public. Such museums include The National Galleries of London and Scotland, the National Gallery of Ireland, the Fitzwilliam and the Pinacoteca di Bologna and Cento in Italy. Sir Denis also deposited his other major Collection comprising of 50 Guercino Drawings with the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford to be accessible to the public in perpetuity. | |

A Service of Thanksgiving was held at St-Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square on Tuesday June 21, 2011 to pay tribute and give thanks for the inspirational life and works of Sir John Denis Mahon, and for his enormous influence and great contribution to the art world, scholarship, public life and national heritage.
